film scoring lessons Los Angeles Red Pelican Music Alex

Alex W

We'd been looking for recommendations for in-house piano lessons for our 7-year-old with no luck--so happy we finally came across Red Pelican in our search! She's been studying with Alex and I can't imagine a more perfect fit. Lessons are focused on helping her learn foundational skills at an age-appropriate level, and Alex hits the perfect balance between encouraging good skills and ensuring she's giving her best effort. We couldn't be more satisfied.

Alex was the best choice imaginable for me to learn piano. I came to him as an adult with zero musical experience and he was able to help me master my favorite score from the movie Amelie, "Comptine d'un autre ete," on piano. Always inspiring me to be a better student, I can't recommend Alex highly enough!
Kevin Stiller, piano lessons
Alex has helped me so much on the start of my journey through music. He made piano fun and addictive, while also helping me get a foot in the door with film composition. He’s a great teacher and I highly highly recommend him to anyone interested in music!
Matthew Lynch, piano and film scoring student
Alex is a gifted composer and orchestrator and has a very strong dramatic instinct. He has a very original sense of sound design, strong tech skills and is extremely organized. He's a fast programmer and an excellent pianist. He absorbs knowledge and integrates it quickly into his arsenal. He's very smart and an easy hang!
Lawrence Shragge, composer and professor of screen scoring at USC

Alex’s specialties include jazz and classical piano lessons, film scoring, and music recording/production. Alex holds degrees from UH (classical piano), and USC (master’s degree in film scoring), and enjoys working with eager students of all levels. As Alex explains, “my favorite students are those that show a curiosity to expand their musical tastes and have interest in being CREATIVE while they play. Outside-the-box students are some of the best to work with, and I appreciate all students that are driven to learn and expand what they know!”

Alex is comfortable teaching virtually any genre of music – from classical sonatas, jazz improvisation and orchestral composition, to heavy metal. If that wasn’t enough, Alex also has wealth of hidden talents, so be sure to check out his secret skills on the sidebar 😉

Alex’s favorite musicians include, Brad Mehldau (piano), Jimmy Page (guitar), Nate Smith (drums), and Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross (composition, songwriting and music production)
