Matt is a very funky drummer, with an infectious feel – he can lock to modern electronica, classic jazz, or a Stone’s track with pocket and precision. As a drum student, you’ll enjoy Matt’s enthusiasm and appreciate his patience, and supportive style.
Originally from the San Francisco Bay Area, Matt began playing drums at the age of five, after seeing his uncle, a jazz pianist, play live. He studied jazz drumming at Sonoma State, and performed with numerous bands, before moving to Los Angeles.
As a drum teacher, Matt covers hand and foot technique, rudiments and applying them to the kit, reading, and various styles (jazz, rock, funk, latin and more). Matt’s lessons are always personalized for each student.
In Matt’s words, “I share the same enthusiasm my students have. Being around a student who is excited about drumming and interested in learning always fuels my desire to keep progressing.”
When not teaching drums, Matt loves BMX. His favorite rider is Tom Dugan.
Matt’s favorite drummers include: Paul Motian, Brian Blade, Fabrizio Moretti (The Strokes), Charlie Watts.
*Matt is currently on a mission to collect every recording Paul Motian plays on.
